Our support for This Girl Can in 2022

Launched in January 2015, This Girl Can is a nationwide campaign to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability.

Born to address the fact that although the number of people being active in England was increasing, there was a clear gender gap with girls and women remaining less active.

Research shows that many girls and women are put off taking part in physical activity due to a fear of judgement – this might be about the way the look when they exercise, that they’re not good enough to join in or they should be spending more time on their families, studies or other priorities.

The campaign celebrates active girls and women who are doing their thing no matter how they do it, how they look or even how sweaty they get, and has successfully persuaded nearly three million girls and women to get more active.

Campaign success so far

The campaign took on a three-phased approach to ensure it created maximum exposure and support to achieve the goal of transforming people’s lives through sport and physical activity.

Phase One Jan – Jul 2015 – Liberating girls and women from the judgements that hold them back.

Phase Two Feb – Jul 2017 – Increasing the resilience of girls and women who drop in and out of activity.

Phase Three 2018 – 2021 – Overcoming the social, cultural and economic barriers holding them back.

The campaign has emotionally engaged with the target audience, changing behaviour and attitudes towards physical activity. It has captured attention and won awards in England and Internationally. See the full story so far here sportengland-Campaign-Summary.pdf

How are we supporting?

At Home Estates reached out to local sports clubs, that provide opportunities for girls, inviting them to take part in creating an inspirational This Girl Can video. We have had a huge response and are looking forward to the launch of the video later this month.

Why are we passionate about this campaign?

  • Raises awareness of opportunities available in our area
  • Encourages girls to get active
  • Research shows getting active supports mental health
  • Helping clubs to recover from financial pressures from covid-19 sport restrictions

How can you support?

This Girl Can seeks to tell the real stories of girls and women who get active or play sport in the way that’s right for them using images that show what activity really looks like in all its sweaty, jiggly glory.

If you want to become a supporter and continue to encourage and inspire girls and women to get active you can join the Supporters Hub. Head over to the website to register and get access to a host of campaign information and branded promotional materials www.thisgirlcan.co.uk/our-supporters
